On Date 100, on a Thursday at twelve-eleven in the afternoon, in the first week of July,
Nora Bennett walks into a small café near a publishing-house office and sits across from
a senior editor named Hannah — and twenty-three minutes into the introduction,
recognizes that the project has, on its own schedule, produced its hundredth first impression.

The Arrival is the fifth and closing volume of the One Hundred First Impressions sequence.
The smallest of the five by design, it covers the final twenty encounters — Dates 81 through 100 —
alongside four threads the calendar had been quietly making room for:
Oliver's third four-day visit in late May, the publication of Nora's first essay on June 1st,
the four-publisher response window closing June 2nd, and the four-week summer visit beginning July 6th —
the morning the long-distance arrangement, at last, closes the distance.

The twenty final encounters include an orchestral conductor who holds two thousand years of accumulated
practice in a single evening's frame; a civic lawyer eight years past the peace with his own career;
a bridge engineer whose work outlives him by one hundred and seventy years; and a theatre director
who has spent sixteen years building the audience that makes the productions possible.
Each one adds a sentence to the receipt-pocket Nora has been carrying since April — a map,
still widening, of every trade that requires an adult to make peace with its own calendar.

It is also a volume of completions: the slips drawer, after eighteen months of accumulation,
closes; the kitchen hook retires its third artifact; the eleven-sentence list marks its final checkpoint;
and the writer at the desk in the gray sweater, on the morning of Saturday July 11th,
drinks a coffee at the kitchen counter and, for the first morning in nineteen and a half months,
has nothing pending.

The project is over. The life is open.
