The Becoming covers the long middle of finishing — the long-distance correspondence with
the man in Scotland, weekly letters written in pen and sent by post; a four-day visit to Edinburgh
in February that tests, at the level of streets and stairwells, the architecture of an ocean apart;
and the careful daily work of completing a two-hundred-and-twenty-thousand-word manuscript for the
literary agent who signed her in October. Alongside Oliver and the manuscript, twenty new dates
unfold — a chef whose nights cannot meet a writer's mornings, a curator three weeks out of a
six-year relationship who tells the truth on time and in the right grammar, a music critic who
has read the manuscript's preview three times before writing her, and a pediatrician who retires
his own candidacy at minute eighty-eight before she has to.

It is also the volume of better farewells: Aleksandr's clean four-line text,
